Category 2: How to Choose Newborn Diapers and Related Accessories

Updated: Apr 26, 2021

To take care of newborns' little cute sensitive butt, you need to buy diapers, baby wipes (no need of diaper or wipe warmers except very low temperature places), diaper cream, and last but not least, a diaper bag for all of the above. This post will teach you some tricks and help you decide on what to buy and which brands to buy.

(I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.)

How to choose the right kinds of diapers:

To me, the most important factor to consider is always absorbency first, then softness/comfort, then cuteness. Do NOT buy too many diapers of the same size, newborns grow up faster than you think!!

First, you need to decide you want reusable or disposable diapers. Reusable diapers are environment friendly while disposable diapers are more convenient for parents, especially new parents without extra help.

If you choose reusable diapers, there are cloth diapers with or without inserts. Diapers with inserts are usually more absorbable than diapers without inserts. Reusable diapers look like this:

If you choose disposable diapers, there are much more brands to choose from. Pampers and Huggie are among the most popular brands, and are available in almost every supermarket (not just online). After I tried both, I found that Pampers Swaddler diapers absorb the liquid faster than other diapers. Besides, Pampers Swaddler diapers are very soft and fit best.

When you change newborns, baby wipes are also important. Pampers also has baby wipes for sensitive skins with no fragrance. Remember to buy a tube, then you can use refills, which are cheaper.

How to choose Diaper Cream

Diaper cream is important to newborns since it prevents newborns from diaper rashes. Diaper cream usually contains zinc oxide, which is not necessary for skins without rashes. Thus, thick cream like Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment is enough for daily life.

However, a real diaper cream is necessary to be at hand just in case newborns have diaper rash. Desitin is one of the few brands available in almost all the big supermarkets.

How to choose a diaper bag:

Diaper bags need to be having plenty of pockets, light weighted and easy to carry & clean, better with a changing pad & stroller attachment. To me, a backpack/tote (hand free) diaper bag is easier to use than crossbody, though crossbody style looks more fashionable. Besides, old brands such as SkipHop, Kipling (lightest bag ever) are more reliable. For example, this is a SkipHop backpack diaper bag.
